Could the announce list be selectively propagated, such that it goes
preferentially to e.g:
announce, main, lpsg, newbie.  Only one of the above?  Or is that
asking too much of the software?

It would be nice to receive announcements on only one list.  Not four
times if you happen to be subscribed to all of them.  That's the only
downside I see to blind automatic propagation.
