Well, after setting up the "Topics" item (the new name for "smart folders"), the associated folder does kinda do what you want. Another "Topics" recipe might show items without regard to their location, but (perhaps) only selected because of their "type" -- that's how events and news works, I guess. For book reviews, (and member contrib, etc), a sensible approach is to create a custom plone type -- the exact workings of which I'm stumbling over a little. But I think the general idea is - to basically duplicate a standard type with merely a new name, Add a "Factory-based Type Information" (but I haven't yet made this work) - to create an item that has a custom creation/edit templates, you have to do something more -- I think that's where TR was talking about archetypes.
