I don't think it's a good idea either. The biggest reason being that very few people play custom maps anyhow, so you are advertising to a very select group of people with narrow interests. Ethically, you're making money off of Valve with no royalties going back to them, too. It would kind of be like interrupting someone's TV station to put your own ads on the air for free, using the station's own equipment.
