Thanks for your help. He is an extremely gentle dog, and would not harm a flea. We have small children who climb on him, and it doesnt bother him at all. He just lays there. But as far as the fearful issue goes, its more of him being jumpy and running away from us. Like if you extend your hand to offer him a piece of chicken, or piece of food, he backs away, then turns around and runs. Or if you walk by him, at different times, he runs out of the way. Or sometimes he will be so skittish, that he will run right into the wall trying to get away from a loud noise. He is definately the worst with sudden loud noises. He frantically runs into the other room. We have noticed that it tends to come in waves...like it will subside greatly for a while, and just when you think things are hunky dorey, it completely manifests itself again. It has been so frustrating, because we have poured into him for 2 years, and it feels like he doesn't trust us still. Like he thinks we are trying to kill him if we throw him a treat, etc. Its hard. I dont know what to do! We have 3 small children, and due to financial circumstances last year, we had to move into a small house without a yard. He is cramped in here, and has no where to go. We are often not home, so he is stuck at home by himself, which is sad. Its hard to take hime places with us, because between his issues, and the strollers, and the little ones, its impossible to manage alone. I try to walk him, but with the little ones, the pace is slow, and we dont cover much territory. We took him to the vet for his check up last week, and he has gained 10 pounds this year, just from a lack of excercise. The vet said he needs to be walked at least 2 miles per day, which is impossible for where our family is at right now.I want him to be happy, and I feel like there must be someone out there who has time and patience, and a heart for a sweet guy like this dog. I dont want to do the wrong thing, and he really is a precious dog. In spite of the fear issues, he is very very cute, and is gentle with a calm disposition. He is not hyper at all, and never jumps on people. When we take him to dog park, he ends up being the dog who is chased by all the alphas. He doesnt enjoy it at all!
Well, I look forward to hearing from you! I appreciate your advice and assistance!
Kim

I agree Abbie a shelter would be a very bad place for a dog like this.  There is a standard poodle rescue and I happen to be connected to it.  I will give them a call and see if they take mixes.

Does this boy have any bite issues?  When he is fearful, what exactly do you mean.  I am a dog trainer and would like to know the severity.

Well, that's just a bit of a trip to Michigan.
Have you looked around for rescue in your area? I too think that it is a bummer when people get too busy for their dogs, but it happens and I would rather see a dog go into a new home with time to spend, then to stay in a home where they are not getting the love and exercise they need.
Try searching for poodles on petfinder in your area and then e mail rescues that have poodles to see if they have room for a mix. There aren't any doodle rescues that I know of but many poodle rescuers (such as myself) will take poodle mixes to rehome. A shelter environment does not sound like it would be good for this dog, you really want to do your best to get him into a foster situation with somebody who is well versed in rehab. It sounds like your dog just needs some stimulation to get over his fears. A shelter is OVER stimulation and will not be good for him.
    Good luck,

Where is this dog located?

First let me tell you that a dog deserves to be taken
care of by its gaurdian, be that a home in the country
or city. It doesn't matter where you live to a dog as
long as you spend time with the.

From the sounds of it you may be just what he needs.
A dog would much rather stay with his family than to
be passed off to someone else. Especially a dog like
this, it will be very unnerving for him to be placed
in another home and have to learn everything all over
again.

A big backyard is no prerequisite for getting or
keeping a dog. You took on this dog and you should
give him the best life that you can. If that means
walking him, then you walk him.

You cannot turn him into a rescue or shelter without
telling the people the 100% truth about him. And
there is a good chance he would be euthanized at a
shelter, now thats not a fair life for him.

There are some very good reasons to place a dog but
(just can't fit him in) isn't one.
