I was initially confused myself - until answers started coming through
on the list. I understood that Wendy was making a lace fan and had some
trouble with the outside curve on the fan. But now I believe that she
is making a straight lace with fans in the design. And when I first
tackled fans, I began to learn the finer points of tensioning! The
answers Wendy got were all examples of ways to tension a fan in straight
lace. Putting in twists to "lock" the outside pair, tensioning toward
the headside edge, splitting the workers... all tricks that work,
depending on the look you're going for.
