After previous suggestions I did check the spool and it seemed fairly strong. Gentle tugging didn't break it.
It is white Egyptian Cotton 60.

Also being careful how I work, so far (crossing my fingers tightly) I haven't broken another one yet. But through this thread of conversation I did learn about trying that in the future before I prepare lots of bobbins and get into working lace:-) so thank you all for that, also it made the difference between me cutting it off and working slower and more gently still to see if I can make it work, so thank you all for that.

Nine times out of ten it may be true and then there comes the Rogue Reel (or the Suspect Spool, depending on which side of The Pond you have to cope with it) :)
