This problem is due to the bad placement of the superscript ^n
on the \mathbb{R} . Notice how it is too far to the right.
So much so that it extends beyond the black `cropping bar'.

To verify this, hold down the mouse-button (right, if 3-buttons)
on the image and open it using the `Open this Image' (Netscape) menu option.
Next choose `Page Info' (Netscape) and look at the magnified image.

Fix the macro to create this, and you will probably no longer get the
cropping bar remaining;

e.g.  \newcommand{\RR}[1]{\mathord{\mathbb{R}^{#1}}}

Use $\RR{n}$ for the space of $n$-dimensional vectors over $\RR{}$.

If the cropping bar persists, then add a little bit of space:

e.g.  \newcommand{\RR}[1]{\mathord{\mathbb{R}^{#1}\,}}
or    \newcommand{\RR}[1]{\mathord{\mathbb{R}^{#1\,}}}
or    \newcommand{\RR}[1]{\mathord{\mathbb{R}^{#1}\mkern1mu}}
or  etc.

>I don't think the problem comes from an obsolete installation of netpbm. I

Nope.
Your LaTeX macro is bad, forcing too much space around the \mathbb{R}
before the superscript is placed.

Furthermore, the low resolution of the fonts is something that could
also be having an effect. Compare with

Go PostScript, for better font images.

Hope this helps,
