One such thing that I can remember is the Polio vaccine.  

Big breakthroughs are usually the result of a lot of smaller ones.

Of course there is still more research and development to be done on
this, and it will be done.  But at least there is something, which is a
heck of a lot more than we had.  And there is hope that something may
come of it.  If not, then it could be a start to finding something else.
