how can you make that assessment when White and Sam have only started one game
together this season ?

Pugh will keep us in this league - if that's what you want ??? I don't.

Their right back had acres of space, it was Sam's fault for moving inside,
then White had a difficult decision to make.. stay with his man or close
down the right back.

Defences work as a unit, on this occasion the left defensive unit was at
fault for the goal.

It was a fantastic cross and you cannot blame the central defenders for not
clearing it, and actually Connolly was out of position after the foul that
the referee allowed play to continue from.

But anyway, White is much more effective as an attacking player when Pugh
plays left midfield.  In other words, White's contribution is DIRECTLY
affected by his left-sided partner in the team.  Just as Snoddy is more
effective when playing with Connolly.

Therefore it is schoolboy football management to simply say "Sam is better
attacking than Pugh so he should be picked".  You have to look at the team
dynamics, pros and cons, and overall team effectiveness/balance.

There's no way you can blame White for Burnley's goal. The guy got a cross
in - what were the defenders doing ? Connelly was nowhere and Kisnorbo too -
far too easy.

It was the first time White and Sam had started together so it wasn't going
to be perfect but Sam did enough good things including the cross for our
first goal which suggests to me he should stay in the side. I would argue
that if Danny Pugh had been playing we wouldn't have won the game because
theres no way he would have been able to produce a killer cross like that.

Rich I can see your point about Becchio. I'm not sure that I agree. To put
it another way I don't think you see positive sides of Becchio. He is a
talisman and he can never be ignored by the opposition defense.
Pugh is a solid players player. Competent, never brilliant, but never making
howlers or not fulfilling orders.
I like his play. He's never the star but it is of no coincidence that White
plays well with him in the team and was responsible for a goal being scored
against us when Pugh was absent.
