I understand what you mean but I think the belief amongst most is that he
could have done a Bob Paisley or even Joe Fagan. Shankly was the better
manager but Paisley was the most successful Liverpool manager. Shankly
didn't win a European Cup whilst Fagan did, but there is little doubt that
it was Shankly and his boot room with the infrastructure and ethos he
created that won all 3 European Cups. If Giles could have led that team to
European Cup glory then just like Paisley he could have used that momentum
to create the greatest team ever. The Shankly effect, although not having
happened yet, was also what Clough feared, his ego couldn't cope with him
winning any trophies with Revie's team. It had to be Clough's team and
Clough's achievement. Any semblance of the Don's team had to be eradicated
before he could assert his claim to be the best manager.
