One advantage that I can think of is that the normal "Alternate Names" window gives you a button to "Swap Alternate Name with Main Name". This has come in handy for me on several occasions in the past when I've discovered what I thought was an alternate name turned out to be the person's registered birth name.
In addition, that "Alternate Names" window has the Source Citation icon which can be applied to any of the alternate names and just as any other citation, actual source text or comments can be added there which can be selected to be added to reports if desired, as well as the typical multimedia attachment such as a scan of a document or picture. What's the advantage of having the info split between the "Alternate Names" and creating an "AKA Event"?
