Apologies for the long message. I followed the advice of Legacy Technical Help, as follows; 1. Click Search on the menu bar and select Find to open the Search window. 2. Click on the Detail Search tab and then set the following 'Primary Conditions': Look for whom? = Individual Where to look = Source-Citaion How to look = Contains What to look for = (insert ‘space’) 3. Select 'Clear List before this search' and then click Create List. The Search List (a subset of the Name List) will then open.4. Go to the right side of the Search List and select the Sources tab. You will now be able to highlight each source for a person, then click the Detail button and check each one for problems.
As suggested, I ran the Search, producing 8215 individuals. I then checked all of them (!) - I estimate around 25000 Citation Details. After eliminating obvious human errors such as mis-spellings etc, 46 errors remained. These occurred in Detail fields of Birth, Marriage, Death and, less commonly, Census and consisted largely of the correct data being replaced with ‘RG’, ‘R’, ‘1’ or ‘B’. The first 2 of these are presumably data leakage from insertion elsewhere of census details (UK censuses commencing with the letters RG) and the third from the first digit of a date insertion elsewhere. The ‘B’ could be from anywhere. As a last resort last week, I exported a Gedcom of my database, and reimported it to a new Legacy Standard installation. This appears to have had the effect of renumbering some, but not all, of the RINs which do not necessarily now run in date of input order. The errors however tend to occur in clusters of RINs. I am now in the situation where I am unsure whether to correct the errors or not – will this cause further overwriting / leakage elsewhere? Either way, I now find it difficult to trust Legacy. I recommend others should check their Citation Details to see if a similar 'hidden' bug exists widely or if it's just me and one other.
