David,

Whilst I would agree that if one physically has the certificates in one's
hand, then the source is the certificates, all 17 of them ( I trust that
they are all different :-)). However if they are images on Ancestry the
Source, in my view, would be Ancestry. In the UK it is illegal to publish
BMD Certificates on-line, so in that case you would be correct, but I do not
know the position in the rest of the world.
In my family file I have 17 death certificates all from Ancestry.com
but I am confused how to cite them.
The source if the information is the certificates, NOT Ancestry.com or even
the State or County. So with 17 certificates you would have 17 sources. This
is the same for birth and marriage certificates.

Ancestry.com is not a source but a depository, just like the records found
at a library, Archive and etc are not the sources, but again a depository.

For me....... Each one is a source is it not ? You only have three. I
would source, each one (not 17) but your three you have found, and cite
them accordingly.
