Jane, To answer your question – I haven’t a clue :-)
Try shutting your PC down and leaving it for a few minutes before starting up (ie. don't use the restart button!). You say that you tried to "open the GEDCOM" - I don't suppose it will help, but how did you try? I found a tree on Rootsweb, downloaded the gedcom, and tried to open it. It would not open and now my main data base will not open either. When I click on the icon, nothing happens.
