Jane, To use a GEDCOM file in Legacy you cannot use the Open. Go to File > Import From > GEDCOM file. Legacy will then read the GEDCOM file an translate the information in it to a Legacy file that you can open.
When you say "Legacy would not open after that" what do you mean. Are you trying to start Legacy from the Legacy Icon on your desktop by double clicking? Does Legacy open but there is no open file?
