I certainly don't understand your point.

This really has nothing to do with your mother's privacy.  Those not
actually known dead would need to be treated as alive for reporting
purposes, and those known to be dead would be handled as you normally do.

The point is that it would be HIGHLY convenient to record your current state
of knowledge about a particular person.  It would be good as a research
tool.

For example, tag all folks who have an "unknown" status so you could search
the SSDI, and then track down death certificates, etc for those who had
passed.

Similarly, you could work through the family, and perhaps find some of these
"unknown" folks, and perhaps interview them and learn something more about
the family.

What objection do you have to more accurately recording the information
availble to us?

I appreciate your point of view.  However,  I have a mother still alive.
She was born in Jan 1912.  What about the respect of her privacy?  In Utah,
it is my understanding they have a 100 year waiting period.  I would suggest
that  there comes a time to fish or cut bait.  I would suggest cutting bait.
