It was the descendants report I first noticed it on, but I have tried others
and this birth and death shows up on those too - the print events marked
private option and print private notes are not checked under report options.

You do not say which report but you will find each report has, Index
Options, Report Options etc. You need to ensure that in these options the
Print Events Marked Private Options are not checked.
