The UN, > of which The US is a treaty obligated member, was asked to help > Kuwait. Our decision to participate in no way justifies hating nor > threating the US or it's citizens. A "sovereign" nation that many (including many Kuwaiti's) considered to be an integral part of Iraq. Which makes it a civil war. And the UN involvement took much US prodding. And most of the participating countries were PAID by the US to take part. Remember that Syria took part only after it was no longer blamed for the PanAm bombing over Lockerbie (sp). Of course Bush quickly and loudly proclaimed there was no "quid pro quo". > 3) Saddam starved, tortured, and bombed his own citizens. He did > these things directly, as well as indirectly through his embezzelment > of the Oil for Food program, along with France, Russia, and Germany. > The USA has, by far, the cleanest hands on that score. > These are all internal Iraqi matters. Hardly cause for war. Our own President Lincoln did many of these same things to his "own people" who were in the process of secession. Indeed, his wife, Mary Todd, was accused of much embezzlement during that war. > Saddam and Saddam alone is responisble for the state of his country. > He had years and years of opportunity to be straight with weapons > inspectors, rather than play Musical WMD sites. He could have also > stepped down at any time and lived a comfortable existence in Syria, > Saudi Arabia, or Yemen, amongst other places. > To blame the US for Saddam's hatred is enabling dictatorship. > The US cannot wipe it's hands clean of Saddam's atrocities. We GAVE him much of the WMD's he used. And one can hardly blame him for not coming clean with the inspectors. He was surrounded by enemies. He could hardly claim to be weaponless. That would be foolhardy. And, it is doubtful if he would be welcome in Saudi Arabia (a country he had invaded) or Syria. Besides, I think his tastes run more to France or Switzerland. PEACE Steven R.
