I always ask why as well. It's a fair question and should be asked. However, I don't want to be standing isolated in an ivory tower whilst asking the question. The room tends to echo and the people below are too busy to even hear the question, let alone would bother to answer it.

their evil advocacy ('put up or shut up') 

Unless you're Tony Soprano reminding his gang who's boss, burden of
proof is on the aggression advocate.
