John, So you agree that development of business is the answer to the problem, correct? And you agree that govt treaty "aid" had previously done very little (before you and Elaine arrived) to develop business, right? And do you agree that the mother of invention (innovation) is necessity? Do we at least agree on those three points?
-Mark PS: I curious. Why are they called Vista "Volunteers" if they are (you were) being paid? I don't know the budget of AmeriCorps (parent of Vista [not a corporation but a govt program]) but here's a hint from a 2003 article: "Without the $100 million, AmeriCorps will not be able to fill 20,000 of its 50,000 volunteer slots this year." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A10504-2003Jul31.ht ml ************ {American jurors have complete Constitutional authority to vote "not guilty" based on nothing more than a disagreement with the case, no matter the evidence - despite the judge's instructions. There is absolutely no obligation to vote "guilty" to arrive at a unanimous verdict. Get on a jury, stand your ground, and fulfill its other main purpose: to counteract abusive government and unjust lawsuits. Oh, no, I finished a second year and moved on to teach on the Wind RIver Reservation in Wyoming. This article began with a post I was sharing...showing a business success on this reservation. I showed an article on how VISTAS found a way to assist the Ute and Navajo children in San Juan County with sales of home made candy over the Internet. The success was so surprising that the parents are now involved. That is what we do there...we need to first begin with education. A person who can not read or spell can not access the Internet, and this is one major way to find a market for their products. I set up a business council to help Ute adults with assistance with business decisions. Here is an example of past Ute business dealings. An old woman asked me to give her a ride 25 miles to pick willow shoots to weave a basket (really a large plate) as she was too old to walk. THe next few days I saw her walking through the reservation picking plants. For the next week she bioled down those plants to make dye to color the willow. Then, she wove the most beatiful basket in reds blues greens and yellows. It took her 3 weeks to finish it. SHe came into the Education Center and was so proud to tell me "I sild my basket for $400!" I thought, well that is good, it will go a long way. A few weeks later I was in locan 'Indian Crafts' shop in the town south of the reservation, Her basket was hanging on the wall with a price tag of $2600 on it. THAT is their experiences. We helped them find markets for their work that is better than $2.50 an hour for their labor. ps...I would not care who paid the $700 a month or where it came from, believe me. ------------------------ Yahoo!
