Yeah. Let's forcibly deport 12 million people. I assume we'll have no problem winning the hearts and minds--because we're so good at it--of a large group of people who would have nothing to loose (they already would have lost everything when we deported them), who would hate our guts, and will happen to right next door in Mexico. I'm sure Al-Qaeda will be right there to offer assistance, training, and C-4 vests.
Immigration, like most human activities, is a response to the needs of the market and, as such, is better left in the hands of the market. In general, the market is able to absorb immigrants when they're given a chance to assimilate and, as a result, the economy benefits. Over time, as immigrants begin to acquire assets and to build wealth, they too begin to have a stake in their new country and then, only then, they assimilate. On the other hand, when immigrants are not given such a chance and instead are harassed and vilified they tend to respond with the only thing they have: a Mexican flag or whatever flag they happen to have at home. It's a normal reaction. Conservatives, once again, have outdone themselves at dehumanizing individuals they don't know, lumping them all in a group (because they all look alike), and hating them for who they are. The anti-immigration crowd has overlooked the dynamics of the market on this issue and, by invoking the crossing of an artificial dividing line between the US and Mexico give the impression that they would never let common sense get in the way of a good process.
