If you get to know me, you'll learn that is about my biggest gripe with government. That's the entire welfare state, not just the part taken by illegal immigrants. But the reality is it exists. Our libertarian Utopia is no more real than the communist Utopia. I live in the real world, where the welfare state exists, and I pay a lot for it. A "war on illegals" will turn into a war on Americans, just as the war on drugs has, and will be just as successful, and for the same reasons--where there are strong economic incentives, no government on earth can hold back the tide. # One of my preferred approaches is setting up an impenetrable "border fence," but not at the geographic border of the US. Instead, force the government at all levels to check the legal residency/citizenship status of anyone applying for welfare state benefits. For those of us who don't feed off the teat of government, there is no loss of freedom. Only the parasites -- legal or illegal -- would be affected.
