In what way did the US interfere to create the Muslim Brotherhood and its many children? The glory days of Islam were nearly a millennium ago. I am not that old. I live in the 21st century. These days Middle East Muslims are among the least civilized people on earth, especially when measured by libertarian values. Without oil, the Middle East (except for Israel) would likely be as poor and unimportant as Africa.
BTW, I was recently in Turkey. The Islamists are contained by aggressive government and military force. There are laws against too much religion. So "Turkey is moving in the right direction" because their aggressively secular military demands it. I know numerous Iranian-Americans. None of them like the regime. They tell me almost no one in Iran supports the regime. I suspect Iran could be a peaceful, free, and productive country if they could rid themselves of the totalitarian Islamist clerics. But those clerics cannot be allowed to get nuclear weapons no matter what it takes. Your response to 1. is consistent with my statement. Your paraphrasing does not change it. On 2., the military people I know are not "clueless lads and lassies." They are ordinary people who take great pride in serving the freest people on the planet, however imperfect that freedom may be. On 3., I agree with cutting welfare state programs, farm aid, etc, but military security is an essential and constitutionally authorized role of the federal government. The USA has been successful in keeping them destabilized. Turkey is moving in the right direction. Muslims were once some of the most civilized peoples while the Christian west sunk into the dark ages. If we would stop interfering in their internal affairs, a moderate and liberal wing of Islam would have a chance to develop. > The objectives with Iran would be 1) eliminate their nuclear weapons > program, and 2) make them pay a price for killing Americans and > otherwise disrupting life in Iraq. Just bomb the hell out of them, then > leave. There's plenty of sand for them to pound thereafter. So far, similar policies haven't worked. The majority of Iran is under 20 years of age and they are interested in a more democratic/capitalistic society. The USA keeps impeding progress in that direction. If I was Iranian, I would want some nuclear deterrents to give the USA pause about their interference. AND, if I was iranian, I would be working hard to move the pricing of oil to Euro based pricing. But, the USA is shoot itself in the foot (tank) here as they keep "printing" money to fund the Iraqi war causing the dollar to decrease dramatically in value. Since oil is priced in dollars, it takes a lot more dollars to buy the same barrel of oil without taking into account increasing world demand. Those who are buying in Euros don't have the same price inflation. > In response to your enumerated points below: > 1. The purpose of the US military is to allow Americans to pursue their own personal interests without external interference. Money shouldn't be spent on "creating an empire" nor promoting certain goods and services, like the war industry. > 2. Are you proposing to take the tax dollars spent on the military -- a > primary government institution -- and spend those dollars on welfare > state programs? The military spending should be cut drastically AND welfare programs should be cut drastically AND government subsidies to farms, oil, etc., should be eliminated completely.
