Enemies tend to be collectivist, so you can't avoid the evil word "they" when rationally discussing the problem. The threat comes from armies or militant groups, and those are collectivist entities requiring collectivist defenses. Such defenses should be as voluntarily staffed and funded as is practical.
Since the LP platform does indeed call for some limited amount of government, it is just as guilty of "collectivist spouting" as I. Perhaps the LP platform was written by collectivist infiltrators. Let's replace the party platform by 300 million individual platforms, one for each American. I'll have my army, you have yours. I think you can buy fighter jets at Toys 'R Us -- don't forget the glue. As for the tax dollars, high taxation is one of my biggest gripes. I'd like the federal government to do nothing more than provide essential security and justice as authorized by the Constitution. To the extent that can be staffed and funded voluntarily, then fine. But a bunch of individuals without a united military deterrent will soon be overrun by a collectivist army.
