Bush and company made lots of mistakes in Iraq -- starting with over-estimating the WMD threat. However, it did serve to draw al Qaeda's resources from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and several Arab countries into Iraq, where the US military has killed thousands of them and decimated their staffing and reputation. Stabilization of Iraq would be a huge propaganda win for the US in the Long War against al Qaeda and aligned militant Islamists.
