Shouldn't the fix just be "state = object->id()"?  If we're
maintaining initial ids on level 0 objects (as Derek has convinced me
is a good idea), and if people aren't imagining they can keep a simple
state corresponding to ephemeral more-refined objects (other than
an Elem,master-elem-Point ordered pair), then I don't see where we
need more metadata.
