I have one that dosen't take to overclocking. Tried it, but thermal
shutdown was WAY too frequent.
Still, I love it for "on the road" use. They get double bonus points for
the long cables on the power pack. Did you ever notice that the only free
outlet in a hotel room is usually at the farthest point from anything to
sit on?
I run standard W98SE, in 32 meg of ram. I haven't bothered to strip the OS,
I'm leery of creating problems.
It's loaded with cadware, I can design circuits, design the PCB to put them
on, and write the firmware they will run (and simulate it), and finally,
put the firmware into the chips on the boards, and then talk to the
finished project, and plug in an emulator to let me debug.
When I commute (600 miles one way) my L50 is between the seats, showing me
a live map with GPS input, and telling the world where I'm at through a ham
radio program called APRS. My family monitors me through www.findu.com to
make sure I'm ok. A fair number of my commutes have been done through
blizzards, ice storms, and other less than wonderful weather.
When severe weather comes, the same application becomes a mobile command
post for a team of storm-spotters. It's got two tornadoes under it's belt
already.
It also does slow-scan TV, which I've used to transmit realtime pictures of
those tornadoes, and other severe wx, back to the county EOC. I'd like to
get a better sound card for it though, I really need line input (MIC won't
work) so I can receive pictures as well.
I'm adding two more transcievers to the car next week, to make a more
flexible system.
I'm tempted by the new vaios, but they are pricey.
