Hey David,
Thanks for the report. I remember considering having my 50CT wired to dual-boot 100Mz/120Mz, but I've still got it in it's original condition. It was the 1st Libretto I actually bought retail at Circuit City way back.
I'm on my 3rd day running the 100CT at 266 with XP installed, and but that one incident of thermal overload ripping a CD with WAC, it's been running fine. I've just set up EAC to rip another CD. So I've have the fan on it now for about 45 minutes with now problems.
I think people were reporting XP taking upwards of 3 minutes to boot. But I seem to manage a bit more than 2. But putting the system into hibernation is quick, and recovering just as snappy. One thing I notice is how it's set to gather 400MB of data on the system so it can me rolled back with the System Restore utility. I've set that back to the minimum of 200MB, as this installation will be ghosted a 2nd time if it keeps getting tweaked as nicely as it has so far on a 'little' 4GB HDD. My hope is to get that 40GB Toshiba HDD to replace it. I have this noisy 20GB Fujitsu HDD, but I think I'd rather sell that and replace it with the 40GB
You're mention of your HP USB HP 8200e CD-Writer makes me think about replacing my HP M820E with something faster. I was never able to get it to write, so I'll probably just save it to function as reader for the 50 and 70. But I'd love to get an external CD-R/RW drive that reads at 40x-50x+ speeds for ripping CDs, and writes at 32x or more if they exist. I wonder if anyonne on the list has a suggestion. Unfortunately I don't think Plextor makes external notebook drives. Buy I wonder who makes ones that might rival their ability to rip audio.
Like David Chien, you apparently had good luck with Win98SE. I've had it installed for a few montss now, and have never had a Windows OS that crashed more. That was the biggest motivator for going to XP. The only thing seems to be that in some cases if XP, or W2K crashes, it could end being a much more of a challange to recover from.
But things have >run so well for so long, I'm a little chicken. :-)
Ghost the drive to a desktop if you can, and then just reload the image if you have any problems switching. I think the method Neil had me go installing Linux Mandrake will be the way I'll go with XP next time. Put the L100 HDD in a desktop via an adapter, and boot the system from the installation CD
Ciao,
Matt

Matthew...
I thought I would weigh in here about overclocking the L100 to 266. I had a company called Portable Computer Enhancements to o'c my L100 to 266. Everything seemed to work at 266 except the Infrared port. So they suggested installing a switch that would allow me to switch between 200mhz and 266mhz. At 200mhz everything worked nicely, even the IR port. I used to use my L100 with a Canon BJC-80 IR printer and >my Handspring Visor for synching with IR but not any more. Now that I >use my L100 as my main machine I leave it clocked at 266 and docked >with the Enhanced Port Replicator. In four years I've only had two >thermal shutdowns. I keep a small desktop fan on my desk and it keeps >enough air flowing over the L100.
I currently have an Addonics pc card 24x CD-ROM, pc card floppy drive, >3Com combo network/modem pc card, and a USB HP 8200e CD-Writer Plus >all connected at the same time with the Enhanced Port Replicator and >no problems running at 266 with the fan blowing accross the L100.
I've been running Win98SE w/64 mb and have been seriously thinking >about upgrading to a 20gb hard drive and Windows XP. But things have >run so well for so long, I'm a little chicken. :-)
Hope this info helps. David T. Gillis
