You don't heat and pull, you heat and apply desoldering braid to pull all the solder away from the joint. Do that on both sides, and you should be able to touch it with the iron and lift it easily with a pin/needle.
You can use desoldering braid on surface mount resistors? I wouldn't have thought there had been enough solder there in the first place to get any wicking ... of course it could also be that I've always used cheap braid ... heh
