You don't heat and pull, you heat and apply desoldering braid to pull all the solder away from the joint. Do that on both sides, and you should be able to touch it with the iron and lift it easily with a pin/needle.

You can use desoldering braid on surface mount resistors? I wouldn't have thought there had been enough solder there in the first place to get any wicking ... of course it could also be that I've always used cheap braid .... heh

Nice to know that this seems to be as simple as it appears in print. I'm looking a similar components in this old Satellite monitor circuit board. I don't know if there are these 'pads' you talk about. And on the other side from componets, there are circular solder points, but seem to be only on surface. Maybe I'll do a bit of practice on it. Though I'm actully hoping I can maintain the 266 speed if I only need the fan for CPU intensive processes.

Was going to respond to more, but it's 4AM, and I've been tweaking and toying all day with XP!
