Comment #38 on issue 3307 by [email protected]: Rest positions incorrect with
non-standard line count

Regarding comment #37: your and my opinion about the proper choice are
clearly opposed. I find the off-center placement in
<URL:http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.17/input/regression/collated-files#tablature-full-notation.ly>
disturbing, and it gets worse in four-string tablature.
There are two conceivable compromises: the first is designing a complete
set of rests intended to have their optical weight centered while
interacting differently with the bar lines. This is too expensive to be
implemented in due time. The other is a slight tweaking of the vertical
positioning of "unruly" rests so that they stay optically centered but
their interaction with the bar lines is slightly different.
Would you consider that likely to improve your personal impression or would
it do nothing worthwhile to address your aesthetic objection?
Apart from those conceivable adjustments, of which one is currently
prohibitely expensive and the other appears marginal to me, we have no
option but make a choice.
There are actually two different cases here with slightly different
leaning. The first is the use in some rhythmic staves (apparently not
commonly used) with regularly spaced stafflines. The other is the use in
tablatures which have 1.5 staffline spacing which makes off-center rests
even more noticeable.
Is there anybody who would want to further differentiate
his "on-line"/"on-center" vote on any of those distinctions? If not, we
can just vote on the main case, and figure out whether we want further
finetuning with that afterwards.
