1). Not sure why this doc wasn't "announced", but take a look at:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/director/ts/documents/director_xtras.htm

2). If you're interested in whether you can communicate, via lingo, with an
xtra, try these steps.
Make sure the xtra you're interested in is installed in the Xtras folder of
the version of Director that you're using. Open Director and in the message
window type "showXLib". This command lists all the available installed xtras
that are "script-capable" ie. they add to lingo functionality or in some
other way are exposed to lingo. Note that the names that appear here can
differ from the file listed in the Xtras folder. eg. in Director's Xtras
folder I see an xtra called "QT3Asset". From the result of the showXLib the
same xtra lists itself as "QuicktimeSupport".
So, now you know which xtras you can communicate with, the next question is
how do I communicate with them? *Most* of the scriptable xtras have a method
for exposing their other methods. Again in the message window type 'put
interface(xtra "QuickTimeSupport")' and the xtra being queried will spit out
the commands it supports.
