Hi Oliver,

The CD Xtra provides control over playback
of MPEG...however, actual decoding is left up to a third party decoder -
either an embedded encoder (Zoran's SoftPEG)
which requires no installation by the end-user or a software or hardware
decoder already installed on the end-user's machine.
So, support for various formats is actually a function of the decoder rather
than the CD Xtra itself.

The embedded decoder option is great for obvious reasons...convenience,
consistency in end-user experience...however, it sounded like you had some
misgivings about using SoftPEG?

There are certainly other options for MPEG playback in Director (e.g.
Tabuleiro's DirectMediaXtra which requires M'soft DirectShow and a target
decoder) but none that I know of, outside of CD Xtra, that do what you need
i.e. provide MPEG playback guaranteed to work without any user software (or
hardware) installs.

HTH,

Josie

Subject: <lingo-l> Josie.. MPEG with D8 on WINDOWS

Hi Josie.

Im doing my diploma thesis about MPEG in multimedia-projects. Do you know,
if the ONSTAGE CD Xtra works with MPEG-2, too?
I have a license of the OnStage SE Xtra and dont trust the SoftPeg Decoder.
I use the Ligos MPEG-2 Decoder, that unfortunately requires installation.
Afa I learned there is no MPEG-2 decoder, that would run without
installation.

TIA

Oliver
