I guess I was showing the gap until the first alleged pre-emptive Windows system, although I don't know that for a fact. It could be that Windows 95 was cooperative too, like the alternatives you mentioned. BTW, it was System 4.2 that was the first Mac system to have multitasking. Prior to that you could use a thing called The Switcher to quickly switch between multiple applications, but those applications weren't still running while they were stashed away.
