While driving to canberra a couple of weeks ago, there was an interesting discussion about the role of the driver in self driving vehicles.

The problem is when it gets too hard the vehicle hands back resposibility to the driver. The problem is the delay in the driver realising the car has done this, then assessing the situation and acting.

So, the suggestion is that you have driver assist or driverless vehicles. I understand the problem is the road laws do not permit this.

The vehicle monitors the driver, to make sure they are paying attention to the
road. Seeing Machines technology was first used in non-automated trucks, to
check drivers were not suffering fatigue.

Yes, I understand how the monitor monitors the driver to make sure they're
still monitoring the vehicle. However I'm questioning the benefit of all this
technology in the first place. Simply driving would be less stressful.
