There could be a bug in the SuSE installer. Are you using an evaluation version, or did you download the beta software from the SuSE FTP Server? Mark Post -----Original Message----- From: James Melin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, January 09, 2003 2:37 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: RH 7.2 LPAR install - HELP I saw no documentation in the instructions I read that told me this was needed. So, no. I tried it to see if I could figure out why in hell under the somewhat more successful SuSE 7.2 distribution I am getting the same mac address reported by both LPARS when I attempt to bring up the SuSE in a second LPAR (no VM as yet) using port 1 of a 2 port OSA ENTR card. I've verified that the card has mac addresses unique for each port. OSA/SF and HMC OSA widgets both show the mac addresses match for each port being unique, and unmodified from the universal MAC address burned in when the card was manufactured. I have SuSE 7.0 up on Linux LPAR 1. Linux LPAR 2 I am attempting to install RH 7.2 (department request) but to see if I could get past that error, I trued SuSE 7.2. SuSE Linux 7.2 when loaded in LINUX LPAR 2 does detect the devices properly in OSA SF port 0 is set for physical LPAR #4, port 1 is set for physical LPAR #5. Relative device addresses 0 and 1 are set for port 0, relative device addresses 2 and 3 are set for port 1. the ENTR card is on chpid 34, devices 830-83f This configuration SHOULD mean that physical LPAR #4 (Linux LPAR 1) sees devices 830,831 and 83F, and that physical LPAR #5 sees devices 832,833 and 83F (83F being the management device/port address) What seems to be happening is this: No mater what I tell SuSE netconfig, (option two for OSA Ethernet, etc) including manually specifying device 832 as the even # device and telling the software to use port 1 (Asks for port, I enter a numeric '1') it pulls the same mac address as the ethernet interface on LPAR 1, using 830 and 83F. When I have the installation software show me what detected subchannels are in /proc/chandev it shows 832,833 and 83F like I expect. So why is it pulling the MAC address of port 0 instead of port 1 (this as show by ifconfig eth0) eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:20:35:04:F6:4D inet addr:137.70.100.134 Bcast:137.70.100.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1 RX packets:340879 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:46151 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 While the spacing and layout are SLIGHTLY different between SuSE 7.0 from where the above was captured and what I see for the 7.2 system, the MAC addresses returned are identical. It should end be 00:20:35:04:F6:CD for port 1. This is the nature of my quandary. My department has a preference to try RedHat. I can certainly try getting some stuff stuffed into the initrd image as people have pointed out as being necessary, but from my perspective the SuSE distribution is MUCH easier to install, this bit of LPAR weirdness not withstanding. |---------+----------------------------> | | "Post, Mark K" | | | <[EMAIL PROTECTED]| | | m> | | | Sent by: Linux on| | | 390 Port | | | <[EMAIL PROTECTED]| | | IST.EDU> | | | | | | | | | 01/09/2003 12:52 | | | PM | | | Please respond to| | | Linux on 390 Port| | | | |---------+----------------------------> >--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------| | | | To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | cc: | | Subject: Re: RH 7.2 LPAR install - HELP | >--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------| Like Dave, did you go through the process to add IBM's OCO drivers to your initrd? If so, what is the size, and timestamp on the kernel and initrd you are using (as it appears on the FTP server, CD, or whatever)? I'm trying to install into an LPAR using the LOAD from CD option on the HMC. I'm having a hard time configuring the GbE OSA adapter on eth0 in QDIO mode. I'm prompted for the card addresses, and I enter 0xF400,0xF401,0xF402. I get an error message that says ERROR unknown verb, enter man chandev. Well, since this is my first RH system, I can't do that yet. Does the IPLable CD have the necessary drivers available for OSA-E cards? If so, the install doc is VERY limited, and since this is an evaluation copy, I have no support available. Any hints, tips, pointers about the initial install would be appreciated. BTW, I already have a couple of LPARs with SuSE running on it, so I know that the hardware is working ok.
