The first card in the 1130 deck actually did the entire cold start. You
could operate the machine after but had to know the control panel. Of
course its always easier with some software. I had a friend who could
cold start an 1130 faster than you could take the card off the top of the
reader put it in the hopper and press start. He did this entirely by
manipulating the switches on the front panel. Talk about arcane skills...

In LPAR, couldn't you still IPL from a tape drive?
Now, if there was only an Escon attached reader.....
Just think of the card deck and resulting floor sort....
I remember IPL'ing an IBM 1130 via cards. Just one hand full. The Suse
Linux 8.1 starter system is over 20,000 cards (2 cases, 5 boxes per
case). If you actually had the entire system on cards, could you ever,
actually, IPL?
