Did you say the real device is a 2540?
Well, if memory serves, the 2540 is a buffered device and if you get
a read check or a card jam the system will only get an intervention
required. Fix the problem and push the start button and you are on
your way!
I had a read brush burn off once. Took nearly an hour for the CE to
get there and perform repairs. The card had a hole burned in it where
the hot brush enlarged the normal hole a bit so I had to make it over,
but it just took of when I hit the start button.

Well, if it *doesn't* work, then the card reader emulation in VM is
seriously broken and needs to get fixed ASAP (which I doubt -- that code
hasn't been touched in ages -- and I fully expect it to work). The entire
point of virtual card readers is that they ARE the same as real ones from a
programming standpoint. I have some scheduled time there tomorrow -- I'll
check at least whether the first few cards will IPL correctly.
You may be confusing this with the P390 3215 emulation. That IS different
than the real thing, so the bare-metal 3215 console support doesn't work
the
same way.
(On the other hand, the chance of getting through a complete IPL of 22K+
cards without a device check or a card misfeed are frighteningly small,
especially on equipment this ancient and neglected...)
