"I've said it before,
and I shamelessly grab this opportunity to say it
again:
FBA FBA FBA FBA ..."

The ironic part is that most of the data nowadays in
MVS is VSAM, which is fixed 4096 blocks and is written
using the media manager. The media manager also
handles the HFS/ZFS files systems, PDSE, and the
extended sequential, amoung other things.

Adding to the irony is that VSAM has essentially been
an FBA architecture since 1972!

Adding more to the irony is that even 3390's recorded
fixed blocks on disk. Each fixed block then contains
the appropriate CKD information.

And the final irony is that ALL dasd subsystems
available today actual record on their HDA's in fixed
blocks on SCSI devices! The CKD is coded/decoded by
the controller into fixed blocks, which is then
written/read from the raid arrays as fixed blocks!
