I attended a local zLinux user group recently.  There was a presentation by
a company that was running WebSphere and Java in production and they are
quite happy.  They work hard for it, however.  Each processor on which they
run has at least two IFLs and each vmid that runs Java has 2 CPUs defined.
They keep virtual storage slimmed down. They monitor a lot, especially
things like garbage collection.They have strict Java coding standards and
code review.

It takes a lot of effort and management support, but if you want the
stability and availability of mainframe for your mission-critical
applications, you can have it.
