Note: If you use an email list that belongs to a vendor, there is certain assumptions that go with it and that is unfortunately a fact of life or at least for me.
While IBM is the only supplier of mainframe hardware, the "linux-390" mailing list is not in any way controlled or censored by IBM or another vendor. Proper behavior is afaik loosely modeled after SHARE. Some of the subscribers wear their vendor uniform (or get recognized even undressed). Representing a vendor means to me more reason not to spread mere opinions and to get your facts right than when you're speaking for yourself and the dog. Although "everyone can afford a mainframe today" it is more popular among large enterprises. As David points out, the choice of platform can be strategic and may be significant enough to affect profitability of the company. So sharing that information with others must be controlled. One installation initially reported several times the number of servers they were running on z/VM and the savings achieved by that. They don't anymore how many servers they run on z/VM because you would be able to compute the savings. So I cannot share that with you either. I have not come across large MySQL installations with Linux on z/VM. That does not mean it would not work, but more that Enterprise IT is a bit different. Many large databases are business critical and large enterprises prefer to have a (large) vendor to yell at. That often means you have to stick to versions of kernel and middleware that the vendor certified.
