I agree that there is a per-unit cost for support in some cases.
In Free Software as we see it today (open source or whatever you want
to call it), I think people are cool with the idea that the author
is not the only source for support, and might not be able to offer any
support at all.
In fact, support is one of the best ways for companies to make money
off open source. Companies like Cygnus, who sell support for the GNU
development tools.
