Your argumentation is equally crap.
You can get USB microcontroller chips in the 1-2$ region.
With FireWire, you'll pay 1$ license fees to apple per port.
Today, every new(er) PC comes with USB. I've never seen
a FireWire interface in a store myself, and those who have
one said they paid in the order of 500$.
Ethernet is quite nice, but still more expensive, because
you either need a dedicated ethernet card or hub port
(xbaseT) or a DC/DC converter (10base2).
