hello
   i have a script which starts in the backgroound at login, which does
the thing you ask. It goes something like this
--------------------------------------------------------
while (sleep 1m)
do
if [ /var/spool/mail/$USER -nt tm ]
then
echo -e " \a"
touch tm
fi
done
