Well, yes you can. You have to recompile the kernel though with the 
supermount option. Otherwise you can compile the kernel yourself. 

After  kernel compile, you have to change the fstab and it should look 
something like this

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

I tried this on SuSE for sometime, but gave up because I did'nt like the 
way gkrellm always showed the tab as on.
