Hi,

I have been asked to improve internet access speed in a LAN. Currently there
are around 20 WinNT nodes and a WinNT server with WinGate installed for
internet sharing and caching (around 100 MB). We don't have ISDN, ASDL,
leased line etc so 33.6 dial-up is the only mode of connection.

I am considering the following options :

1) A linux box with squid for proxy and caching
2) A linux box with ipfwdm for connection sharing and squid for caching
3) A router (most probably LRP or FREESCO or IPRoute) for connection
sharing and squid for caching
4) Install MS Proxy in the NT server and use that.

Actually I really don't know the diff. between 1 and 2 (ie. using ipfwdm for
connection sharing or using squid).

I have read that NAT based internet sharing is more efficient then proxy
based hence I thought of option 3. Is router based solution really speedy
than proxy ?

Are these solution going to have any noticeable improvement than the current
situation (ie. using WinGate) ?

Please suggest which is the best or any other available ideas / options.

Thanks

Bharat
