yeah very true. So online modification is ruled out. But maybe some kind
of an utility may be written which collects ststistics and redials a
couple of times to get a good value of mtu. Or else if say i experiment
with ping -s <some size> is it possible to get an idea from %packet loss.

Almost same here. I use 576+40=616 for my mtu. I was gettink some
5~6k/sec from vsnl. These are kpp-load values and note these are not peak
values neither long sustained ones. When i click on a new link the speed
hovers around this mark tiil the page gets downloaded. Recently however
the performance has degraded.

p.s. I am also using deflate 13 13. Not quite sure if it gives much of a
boost
