hi,
 if i run a small script something lke this from a dial up line and
examine the results will it be possible to guess at good values of mtu.
This is as an exercise only as i am quite satisfied with mtu=616.

size=552
while [ $size -le 1500 ]
do
 echo -e "\nsize $size"
 ping -s $size -c 50 202.54.10.1|grep -v bytes
size=`expr $size + 64`
done

  I have tried this from office but could not make definete conclusions. I
was expecting the logs to be monotonic or having a single trough but its
not that simple. Moreover, i guess one should get avg time/bits to get a
better idea and not just the avg time returned by ping.
   What do you think about it?
                                           sreangsu
p.s. the ip is that of pune's ppp server
