first thanx to all of u!
my problem is now solved.this is how I did it:

first i booted my system by typing "linux 3" at lilo prompt.
this booted my sys in run level 3
logged in as root.
and then removed some of the useless files or less useful files.Thats it!

Actually what happened was that i had copied about 50 mp3's  taking more than
150 mb of space and then halted it and when i rebooted next day the problem
was there. It was because there was not enough space on my hard drive for xfs
to write to.
