run printtool as root. Where you will be able to edit an existing spool
params or add a new one. Once you select that you will be given an option
to select the printer and its parameters. On some printers especially of
the HP vareity there is support for economy mode. I think it uses pnm2ppa
for that, incase you own hp710 sereis you can diectly use pnm2ppa and sent
the ppa file to your printer.
Or else you can try downgrading the resolution like by using -r150x150.
For me this did not turn out well ( ie it ended up using same amount of
toner, with blocky prints). But others say it works for them
